Maruti to pitch A Star at an introductory offer of Rs 3.85 lakh
NEW DELHI: Maruti Suzuki India (MSI), the country's largest carmaker, plans to pitch its forthcoming compact car A-Star, to beat the slowdown.

The company plans to offer the car at an introductory price of Rs. 3.46 lakh. The prices for other variants will go up to Rs 4.12 lakh.

"November and December are usually tough months for carmakers. Knowing that very well, we will be launching the A-Star so that it can bring excitement to the market," according to MSI Executive Officer Marketing and Sales Mayank Pareek.

Maruti Suzuki on Wednesday launched its new hatchback 'A-Star' in the Indian market and said it would in four years come out with its first indigenous car.

The company that is manufacturing A Star at its Manesar plant, is aiming to sell about 50,000 units in the Indian market and one lakh units abroad.

MSI claims that according to the Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI), the A-Star delivers a mileage of 19.59 km per litre.

The car industry, which witnessed a decline of 6.59 per cent in October, struggles to sell car in the year-end as most customers postpone purchases for a new model year. MSI is hoping that the novelty factor associated with its 5th global model will help in overcoming the challenge.

The A-Star will be the latest in a series of global models that Suzuki, MSI's Japanese parent, has launched over the past few years and will be manufactured solely in India.

A star will be made in 3 variants and exported to 150 countries across Europe, Middle east , Latin America, Asia, Australia, and Africa.

It will be exported under the name of Suzuki Alto and Suzuki Celerio. Nissan also plans to market the same car under the name Nissan Pixo in middle East and African markets.

The company expects that A-Star would contribute half of its overall export target of two lakh units by 2010-11.

RTEV and Shuanghuan Automobile Announce Electric Car Partnership
ATLANTA and SHIJIAZHUANG CITY, China, PRNewswire via COMTEX/ -- RTEV (Ruff & Tuff Electric Vehicles) and Shuanghuan Automobile Company announced today that they have formed a partnership to produce and market affordable all-electric cars for sale around the world. The first automobile will be a two-seat compact car that will be launched in the United States in May 2009. It will be marketed exclusively by RTEV under the Wheego Whip name in North America and by Shuanghuan Automobile as the Electric Noble (E-Noble) in the rest of the world.

While the car is capable of speeds of 95 kHz (60 mph) it will be sold to different countries specifically designed to meet the safety requirements of the particular country. For example in the U.S. it will be launched as a Low Speed Vehicle (LSV- 25 mph max) or Medium Speed Vehicle (MSV- 35 mph max) depending on local state regulations, until it passes U.S. Department of Transportation safety crash requirements, which is expected sometime in early 2010.

The E-Noble will be manufactured by Shuanghuan at their factory in Shijiahuang. While the Wheego Whip will be based on the Noble platform, it will undergo final assembly, including the motor, drive train, controller, electronic components and be programmed in the U.S. The cars will feature environmentally friendly dry cell sealed (AGM) batteries, which require no maintenance and feature an on-board high tech charger. The car will travel 80 kilometers (50 miles) on a single charge-and plug in for a recharge on any standard household 110 or 220-volt electrical outlet.

"What has really impressed us with Shuanghuan is their attention to detail in providing a high-quality fit and finish and smooth ride to the car," explained Mike McQuary, RTEV CEO. "Once we locked down the systems and components for a high quality electric drive system, we undertook a global search for a car manufacturer that would meet our expectations of a driving experience that was seamless when compared to its gasoline counterparts. While several car companies that we talked to had solid mechanical systems, it was Shuanghuan that emerged with a commitment to meet the quality standards that American drivers have come to expect in an automobile. Their production of the gas powered Noble gave them a great head start, in that it was more a matter of adaptation of a vehicle, rather than trying to develop something from scratch. They share our vision and see the important potential for the emergence of an electric car as an everyday part of consumer transportation."

"When we were first approached by RTEV, it was their passion that first got our attention. There have been several companies that have approached us and bought one or two cars and tried to convert them to electric. But it was RTEV that quickly emerged as the technology leader for electric vehicles. Combine this with their successful track record as a management team in other ventures and we knew we had made the right choice for a partner," said Shuanghuan General Manager Cheng Bing.

"There is a perfect storm of macro-events that are causing people around the world to take inventory of their personal habits and their effect on the environment across a wide spectrum which includes transportation, and RTEV is entering the marketplace at this pivotal time," said McQuary, former president of internet service providers MindSpring and EarthLink. "The long-held assumption has been that electric vehicles are quirky and impractical for everyday use, and are of interest to only a small group of eco-friendly consumers. We believe that our vehicles appeal to a huge market segment and will fill a middle market demand gap at the right time, with the right vehicles, and a with national dealer network to provide service and support."

Shuanghuan Automobile Company has been making cars since 1988. Its current car models include the SCEO SUV and the Noble. The company is focused on zero defect manufacturing processes and passed the ISO9000 quality control system certification in 2000, and gained 3C constraint products certification in 2003.

Official pictures: Mazda 3 saloon
This is the Mazda 3 saloon, which was unveiled today at the Los Angeles Motor Show.

The car is in American specification, but gives strong clues as to how the Mazda 3 hatchback will look when it is revealed at the Bologna Motor Show in December.

Mazda says the new car is more refined, quieter and has a sportier ride than its predecessor, as well as highlighting that it achieves top-class fuel economy, which will be boosted by the introduction of more efficient engines and a Stop-Start system.

The styling adopts the Mazda family face seen on recent models such as the Mazda 2, and contributes to the car's low aerodynamic drag, making it more fuel efficient.

Inside, the reworked dash has been reworked and the seats are longer to provide better support. There are more soft-touch materials.

The new Mazda 3 hatchback and saloon will go on sale in the UK next April.

Auto Bailout Heads for Defeat as Big 3 Teeter
WASHINGTON: Julie Hirschfeld Davis writing for the AP reported that a Democratic Congress, unwilling or unable to approve a $25 billion bailout for Detroit's Big Three, appears ready to punt the automakers' fate to a lame-duck Republican president.

Caught in the middle of a who-blinks-first standoff are countless manufacturing firms and auto dealers - and millions of Americans' jobs.

For now, with the plan headed for a roadblock in the Senate, lawmakers in both parties are engaged in a high-stakes game of chicken, positioning to blame each other for the failure.

"The Congress need do nothing" during its post-election session this week, Sen. Harry Reid, D-Nev., the majority leader, said Wednesday, although he also said he still hoped lawmakers could strike an elusive deal to carve $25 billion in new auto industry loans out of the $700 billion Wall Street rescue fund.

But it's really up to President George W. Bush's team to act, he said.

"If we can't do it here legislatively, I would hope that the secretary of Treasury would listen loud and clear, because they could take this into their own hands and do what I think is appropriate," the Democratic leader said.

Not our responsibility, countered the White House.

"If Congress leaves for a two-month vacation without having addressed this important issue ... then the Congress will bear responsibility for anything that happens in the next couple of months during their long vacation," said Dana Perino, the White House press secretary.

She said there was "no appetite" in the administration for using the financial industry bailout money to help auto companies.

The White House and congressional Republicans instead called on Democrats to sign on to a GOP plan to divert a $25 billion loan program created by Congress in September — designed to help the companies develop more fuel-efficient vehicles — to meet the auto giants' immediate financial needs.

GOP Sens. Kit Bond of Missouri and George V. Voinovich of Ohio were at work on that measure Wednesday, toiling to placate skeptical Democrats by including a guarantee that the fuel-efficiency loan fund would ultimately be replenished.

"It is the only proposal now being considered that has a chance of actually becoming law," said Republican leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky.

But there was little sign that Democratic leaders would go along. They are vehemently opposed to letting the car companies tap that money - set aside to help switch to vehicles that burn less gasoline - for short-term cash-flow needs.

All of which leaves the Big Three bracing for a bleak winter without government help. General Motors Corp. (GM) has said it could collapse within weeks, and there are indications that Chrysler LLC might not be far behind.

GM CEO Rick Wagoner told a House committee Wednesday that the downfall of his industry could lead to a loss of 3 million jobs within the first year and ripple through communities around the nation.

In sometimes contentious testimony, Wagoner was pressed on when GM would run out of money if the loans weren't extended.

He wouldn't say precisely, but disclosed that the company now was burning through "$5 billion each month."

Still, with the $25 billion emergency package, "we think we have a good shot to make it through this," Wagoner said.

Many lawmakers in both parties, however, are now openly discussing whether bankruptcy might be a better option for auto firms they regard as lumbering industrial dinosaurs that have done too little to adjust their products and work forces for the 21st century.

The carmakers argue that bankruptcy would devastate their companies, but proponents say it would give them a chance to reorganize and emerge stronger and more competitive.

It's unclear, though, whether Democrats controlling Congress are willing to risk being blamed for letting one of the Big Three — symbols of the nation's once-mighty manufacturing sector — go under.

Bailout-shy lawmakers got an earful from jittery constituents last month when the House let an early version of the Wall Street rescue fail, sending the Dow Jones industrials tumbling and erasing more than a trillion dollars in retirement savings and other investments. Congress took a deep breath and reconsidered, passing the plan a few days later.

Faced with a similar collapse in the auto industry, the Bush administration might yet decide to use its authority under the $700 billion financial industry bailout to help the auto companies, or the Federal Reserve could step in — though both have steadfastly refused to do so.

If not, lawmakers have left themselves a contingency plan: Come back to Washington in December for yet another postelection session where they might be able to strike the deal that now seems beyond reach.

2008 LA Auto Show - TRW Automotive Launches Rack Drive Electrically Powered Steering
LIVONIA, Mich. : TRW Automotive Holdings Corp. today announced the launch of its Electrically Powered Steering (EPS) Rack Drive system with Ford Motor Company for the 2010 Ford Fusion and Mercury Milan.

"Launching Rack Drive steering on Ford Motor Company's flagship passenger car models is a milestone for both companies," said Peter Lake, executive vice president, sales and business development for TRW Automotive. "Electric steering is among the technologies with the greatest potential to increase fuel efficiency, reduce CO2 emissions and enable further integration with other electronically controlled systems to enhance safety and comfort."

Rack Drive steering technology, also referred to as 'EPS Belt Drive', brings the fuel efficiency and carbon dioxide reduction benefits of an electric steering system to higher rack load vehicles as compared to TRW's current Column Drive EPS system, already launched on more than 30 vehicle models. As with all TRW electromechanical steering systems, the Rack Drive system only consumes noticeable power when steering assist is needed. The energy consumption of an EPS system is typically less than seven percent of a conventional hydraulic rack and pinion power steering system, thereby providing considerable fuel consumption benefits. CO2 emissions can also be reduced by up to 3.5%.

TRW's EPS Rack Drive system can provide premium performance across a wide range of vehicle platforms with rack assist forces of up to 12 kilonewtons (kN). Power assist is applied directly to the rack allowing for a smooth, responsive, low-inertia, low-friction steering system with direct steering feel.

The Rack Drive EPS system can be programmed with steering assist functions in line with vehicle manufacturer's requirements -- options include speed sensitive steering, positive and responsive on-center steering feel and the possibility to fine-tune the steering characteristics to the vehicle's target market. The system also offers the opportunity to integrate with other vehicle systems such as electronic or roll stability control and Driver Assist System (DAS) features. These features typically include safety related support functions but can also encompass comfort functions such as semi automated parallel parking.

"This has been a great opportunity to work closely with our Ford engineering counterparts to bring a state-of-the-art technology to the market, that provides such a significant customer value" said Frank Lubischer, vice president of engineering, TRW steering & suspension. "The product is delivered as a fully tested, ready-to-install steering system, eliminating conventional mechanical and hydraulic components such as the steering pump, pulley, belt, reservoir and hydraulic lines. Rack Drive EPS adds another exciting product to our safety and chassis-controls roadmap, that couldn't come at a better time, considering the dramatic shift in fuel-economy and safety demands in the industry."

IRL appoints Brazilian ethanol supplier
The US based Indianapolis Racing League has appointed the Brazilian company APEX-Brasil as the official supplier of bioethanol fuel for the IndyCars series with effect from 2009.

Under the terms of the multi-year deal APEX-Brasil in cooperation with UNICA (the Brazilian Sugarcane Industry Association) will seek a partnership with a US-based ethanol company to supply the IndyCar Series with corn-based ethanol.

A statement issued by the IRL said, ‘One of the primary messages of the new partnership is that regardless of the sources used in the production of ethanol - corn, sugarcane, or various cellulosic materials in the future - the end product is identical, a clean, renewable bio-fuel that reduces dependence on fossil fuels and combats one of the major causes of climate change.’

Terry Angstadt, the president of the commercial division of the IRL said, "The move to other sources of ethanol is a natural progression as the ethanol industry continues to grow and evolve. We continue to strive to be on the leading edge of the greening of racing. The IndyCar Series was the first motorsports series to mandate use of a renewable fuel, and now we will work with the ethanol industry in both the United States and Brazil to promote the use of all types of ethanol by consumers.

"During our recent manufacturer roundtables, the participating engine companies were enthusiastic about our potential use of various sources of ethanol. We feel this move is another step in the right direction with our goal of introducing a new engine and chassis by the 2011 season."

Quoth Mitt Romney in the NYT: "Let Detroit Go Bankrupt"
Mitt Romney, former Massachusetts governor, former entrant in the marathon to win the White House, and current automotive industry expert (who knew?) had a few things to say in the New York Times today on the potential auto industry bailout. The opening paragraph says it all: "IF General Motors, Ford and Chrysler get the bailout that their chief executives asked for yesterday, you can kiss the American automotive industry goodbye. It won't go overnight, but its demise will be virtually guaranteed."

Romney is not rooting for the end of the biz, but he believes that bankruptcy is the only way to save it because it will force a reset, and that will be the only way for the Detroit 3 to rectify entrenched structural problems. These include UAW contracts -- "a new direction for the UAW," executive perks -- "sanity in salary and perks," getting rid of old blood -- "management as is must go," just for starters.

Romney believes that the auto industry is crucial to America's national interest in more ways than one. And he isn't against helping the U.S. automakers, but believes that a shock to the system is the only thing that can rescue it, long term. Have a look at the piece and let us know what you think -- but no need to make a decision yet; give it another few minutes, and we're sure someone else will have another prescription. Thanks for the tip, Mike!

Guangzhou Auto Show: 2009 Ford Fiesta
GUANGZHOU, China — The 2008 Guangzhou Auto Show opens to the public today amid a tough time for China's auto industry, but the debut of several important new models shows carmakers are still confident that the Chinese domestic market will continue to drive ahead.

Ford introduced its new Fiesta sedan, which is designed for a new generation of young Asian and especially Chinese drivers. The Fiesta sedan, following an earlier introduction of the hatchback version, will have a 1.4- or 1.6-liter engine. China sales will start in the first quarter of next year.

"Despite the slowdown and the global financial crunch, China's auto market continues to grow," said Wesley Liu, deputy general manager of Chang'an Ford Mazda Sales.

Shanghai General Motors unveiled the Cadillac CTS-V luxury sedan, the Buick Enclave crossover utility vehicle and the Chevrolet Cruze sedan. The Cruze, which will also be locally produced in China in the first half of next year, is among models that were developed from GM's global Delta product platform.

Sun Xiaodong, deputy general manager of Shanghai GM, said the launch of the three models signaled GM's optimism in the auto market.

"Resources to be poured into the Chinese market will not be reduced even as GM is facing challenges in the global market," he said, adding that another 10 to 20 models are planned for the local market in the next two years.

Among the new products launched here, small cars boasting better fuel economy still shine as consumers are more savvy amid a drop in income and rising fuel prices.

Skoda, the Czech brand affiliated with Volkswagen, showed its Fabia in China. The car, featuring a 1.4- or 1.6-liter engine, will be produced by Shanghai Volkswagen. It will hit the market by the end of this year.

China's private carmaker, Geely Automobile, launched its Panda subcompact, which starts at $6,125. The 1.3-liter model delivers 48 mpg.

2008 LA Auto Show - World Debut of New, More Powerful 2009 Porsche Boxster and Cayman Models
LOS ANGELES, Marking a worldwide premiere, Porsche today pulled the wraps off its new-generation 2009 Boxster and Cayman models at a press conference at the Greater Los Angeles Auto Show. Reminding everyone of the long historical roots of these modern cars, the German sports car maker also displayed the first car to don the Porsche name, affectionately known as Porsche No. 1, as well as the company's first-ever race car, the 550 Spyder, which is on loan from the collection of Jerry Seinfeld. Both are among the most historically significant sports cars of their eras and represent Porsche's first mid-engine designs -- the same engine configurations now thoroughly refined in both the new Boxster and Cayman.

The new Boxster -- the famous two-seat roadster first launched by Porsche in 1997 -- and its mid-engine coupe sibling, the Cayman -- which debuted in 2006 -- offer more powerful flat-six boxer engines, which are even more fuel efficient than the powerplants they replace. On the outside, the Boxster and Cayman also receive subtle, yet very distinct, refinements that update the classic sports car design of both automobiles individually. Both add new standard and optional features for the 2009 model year.

The new 2009 Boxster and Cayman models go on sale in the U.S. in March of next year. 2009 Boxster pricing in the U.S. starts at $45,800 for the base version, $55,700 for the Boxster S, $49,400 for the base Cayman and $59,100 for the Cayman S.

"Today is our first presentation of the new 2009 mid-engine sports cars, and here is the right place," said Detlev von Platen, President and CEO of Porsche Cars North America. "We wanted to celebrate their worldwide premiere here in Los Angeles since it is, by far, the city with the highest population of Boxsters and Caymans anywhere."

For the first time, the Boxster S and the Cayman S use Porsche's new direct fuel injection (DFI) and all versions of these models can be ordered with the company's innovative 7-speed double-clutch gearbox PorscheDoppelkupplung (PDK). PDK is a race-inspired technology that is essentially two transmissions in one: it combines the driving convenience of an automatic with the sporty and fuel efficient operation of manual gearshifts by employing two fully automated parallel clutches. It can be driven as a full automatic or it can be shifted manually via paddles on the steering wheel or through the shift knob. The result is more power with improved fuel efficiency, a development that helps Porsche meet today's demands for reducing environmental impact, yet maintain the brand's performance persona.

"Our mantra at the research and development is that every new model has to outperform its predecessor and does so by offering significant fuel savings," said Wolfgang Durheimer, Board Member in Charge of Research and Development, Porsche AG. "Both Boxster and Cayman pass this test with flying colors: not only are they noticeably quicker and more responsive, they are at the same time even more frugal than the cars they replace."

The new base engine in these models is a 2.9 liter flat six cylinder that develops 255 hp in the Boxster and 265 hp in the Cayman, representing an increase in power of 10 hp and 20 hp, respectively, over the preceding models. The 3.4 liter power unit in the S versions, which benefits from Porsche's Direct Fuel Injection (DFI), now delivers 310 hp in the Boxster S and 320 hp in the Cayman S.

The universally hailed mid-engine concept used in the new Boxster and Cayman models has a long history at Porsche; this heritage is on display in L.A. with the first Porsche from 1948, a one-of-a-kind, mid-engine two-seat sports car lovingly called Porsche No. 1, as well as a historic, mid-engine Porsche 550 Spyder, the first Porsche car specifically designed for racing. Company founder Dr. Ferdinand 'Ferry' Porsche developed and built the Porsche No. 1, or as it is officially known, the Type 356-001, in Gmund, Austria, after he searched and was unable to find the car of his dreams 60 years ago.

"Look at his (Ferry Porsche's) first Porsche of 1948 and his quest for the pure sports car," said Klaus Berning, Board Member in charge of Sales and Marketing, Porsche AG. "It is a simple, yet rather sophisticated design, and it is a blueprint for an idea that would decades later become the highly successful Boxster: its revolutionary mid-engine concept together with a functional, aerodynamic roadster design, lightweight and a small, highly efficient engine resulted in a sports car that was nimble, responsive and quick, and it rewarded its inventor with sheer driving pleasure -- a rare quality in those days."

Another extraordinary car on display is the Porsche 550 Spyder -- a car that was introduced in 1953 at the Paris Motor Show and later became the mid- engine inspiration for the modern Boxster. The car began in 1951 as a small Porsche 356 Spyder that was created and raced by Walter Glockler; several years later, the factory decided to build such a car, making it the first Porsche designed specifically for use in auto racing.

The 550 became known as Spyder or RS, and was the first of Porsche's formidable mid-engine race cars, giving Porsche its first overall win in a major sports car racing event, the 1956 Targa Florio. Several class wins at Le Mans 24-hour event, and wins throughout Europe helped the 550 become a legend in the motorsports world. With over 70 examples produced, the 550 RS Spyder marked the beginning of Porsche's customer race car program that has grown to become a worldwide success.

New Paths To Efficiency: BMW At The 2008 Los Angeles International Auto Show
WOODCLIFF LAKE, NJ -: BMW today showcased a wide range of models and technologies as part of its ongoing EfficientDynamics strategy that exemplifies the German firm's commitment to reducing harmful emissions and to help protect the environment. Rather than focus on just a few models and one or two types of technology, BMW applies its principles to all of its vehicles using a wide variety of technologies. Immediately prior to their market launch in the US and Canada, the 335d Sedan and the X5 xDrive35d Sports Activity Vehicle(R), featuring BluePerformance technology, are being presented to the public in California. Parallel to the North American debut of the all-new BMW 7 Series, the BMW Concept 7 Series ActiveHybrid, BMW's second ActiveHybrid Concept, the BMW Concept X6 ActiveHybrid, will also be seen in Los Angeles. Also featured will be the updated 2009 BMW 3 Series Sedan and Sports Wagon.

BMW 7 Series again sets the benchmark The all-new fifth generation of the BMW 7 Series radiates a natural presence, inherent sportiness and an elegance born of precision in concept and execution. A new V-8 engine with direct injection and twin turbochargers expresses BMW EfficientDynamics at the highest level of performance. The 4.4-liter, twin-turbo V-8 delivers 400 hp and 450lb-ft of torque. New, exclusive BMW driver-assistance systems and comfort-related features further add to a truly exceptional driving and riding experience.

Inside the new 7, the ambiance is luxurious, of transcendent quality and - most important of all - inviting. The driver-oriented control center features Black Panel technology. More functions than ever are conveniently accessible to the driver from the multi-function steering wheel.

The new 7 is BMW's first passenger car with multi-link double-wishbone front suspension. The new Integral V rear suspension incorporates extensive use of aluminum. On the long wheelbase 750Li, self-leveling air suspension is standard. Also new, and a world premiere: Integral Active Steering, which adds speed-sensitive rear-wheel steering. With the standard Driving Dynamics Control, the driver can choose between four settings for shock-absorber firmness, transmission shift characteristics, engine-throttle response and power-steering assist.

An array of innovative driver-assistance options unique in the luxury segment includes Active Cruise Control with new stop-and-go capability, Lane Departure Warning, Active Blind Spot Detection, Head-up Display, High Beam Assistant, BMW Night Vision with new Pedestrian Detection, Side View and Back-up Cameras.

All of this will make the new 7 once again the benchmark for performance, luxury, efficiency and safety when it arrives in the US in early 2009.

BMW Concept 7 Series ActiveHybrid: The BMW of hybrids As an integral part of the BMW EfficientDynamics strategy, the BMW Concept 7 Series ActiveHybrid previews the potential of BMW ActiveHybrid technology in a luxury sedan. In typical BMW fashion, this new concept car combines a significant reduction of fuel consumption and emissions with a level of driving dynamics never seen before even in this class of hybrid cars.

The BMW Concept 7 Series ActiveHybrid is an intelligent symbiosis of BMW's new twin-turbo V8 engine and electric drive as a mild hybrid concept. A compact electric motor, integrated into the transmission housing, replaces the conventional alternator as well as the starter. Power to run all electrics on-board the car is generated by means of Brake Energy Regeneration. The combination of internal combustion engine and electric motor take the twin-turbo 4.4-liter V8's already potent 400 horsepower and 450 lb-ft of torque and supplies an additional 20 horsepower and up to 155 lb-ft of torque as needed. The drivetrain technology featured in the concept car allows enhanced driving dynamics together with a reduction of fuel consumption and emissions by 15 percent in the EU test cycle compared to the same car running on a combustion engine alone. At the same time the use of BMW ActiveHybrid technology does not require any compromises in driving qualities and features of the BMW 7 Series.

Energy is stored in a compact lithium-ion battery housed in the luggage compartment. An Auto Start Stop function helps to ensure optimum efficiency in all driving situations.

The hybrid technology showcased in the BMW Concept 7 Series ActiveHybrid is perfectly suited to the new benchmark in the full-sized performance luxury sedan segment just as the two-mode hybrid technology used in the BMW Concept X6 ActiveHybrid, also on display in Los Angeles, is well matched to the world's first Sports Activity Coupe.

BMW Advanced Diesel with BluePerformance: efficiency and dynamics in abundance With the introduction of the new BMW Advanced diesel powered 335d and X5 xDrive35d models, the BMW Group announces another step in its strategy for EfficientDynamics. Both models will feature a 50-state emission compliant version of BMW's award winning sequential-turbo 3.0-liter diesel engine - the first performance-oriented and efficient Advanced Diesel engine in BMW's U.S. line.

The sequential-turbo 3.0-liter diesel engine powering both models employs both a very small and a larger turbocharger combined with an innovative intake system enabling the engine to develop 265 hp. Even more impressive are the torque characteristics. Fully 80% of the torque is available from 1100rpm to 4200rpm. The peak torque is 425 lbs-ft at 1750rpm - almost as much as BMW's 6.0-liter V12. The performance is what the enthusiast would expect from a BMW. The 335d is capable of sprinting from 0 - 60 mph in six seconds flat. The X5 xDrive35d will do it in 6.9 seconds. No other diesels in the US will perform like this pair of BMW Advanced Diesel models.

Coupled with this performance potential is impressive fuel economy. The EPA mileage estimates for the 335d are 23 city and 36 highway. The X5 xDrive35d is rated at 19 mpg city and 26 mpg highway. Both offer the convenience of travelling approximately 580 miles between fill-ups.

Thanks to BluePerformance technology, this unparalleled blend of performance and efficiency can only be found in a BMW Advanced Diesel.

2009 BMW 3 Series Sedan and Sports Wagon: The quintessential sports sedan and wagon once again raise the bar The 2009 3 Series Sedan and Sports Wagon are poised to maintain market leadership with updated exterior and interior styling, new technologies, enhanced ergonomics and the introduction of BMW Advanced Diesel with BluePerformance in the 335d Sedan.

A Subtle freshening of exterior design features a new front end, more dynamic profile, and wider rear stance. Headlights and taillights are new, yet present a typically BMW look, innovative lighting technology and 3-dimensional effects. The refinement of the interior design reflects and complements the distinctive exterior design. Among functional updates are ergonomically enhanced placement of power-window controls for the driver and new, expanded storage possibilities.

The optional onboard navigation system features an all-new iDrive control concept and display. It offers new menus, new direct-select keys and Programmable Memory Keys. Subscribers to the optional BMW Assist Convenience Plan can access "BMW Search" to quickly find a desired business or other point of interest with just a key word search, using Google search technology and intelligence, even from the convenience of your home or office. Once a destination has been found, route guidance or a hands-free call from a Bluetooth -linked phone is available at just a simple push of a button.

Honda Insight to Introduce Ecological Drive Assist System in Spring 2009
LOS ANGELES, PRNewswire/ -- American Honda Motor Co., Inc., today announced that a new interactive, driver-focused fuel economy enhancement technology named the Ecological Drive Assist System (Eco Assist(TM)) will debut on the new Honda Insight in spring 2009.

The Honda Insight Concept, making its North American debut at the Los Angeles Auto Show, provides a strong indication of the design and styling of the all-new gasoline-electric hybrid model from Honda.

Eco Assist combines multiple functions: the driver-activated ECON mode that optimizes control of the continuously variable transmission, engine and related powertrain components to conserve fuel; and a feedback function that uses speedometer background color to provide real-time guidance on environmentally responsible driving. An economy scoring function further provides feedback about current driving techniques, as well as feedback on cumulative, long-term driving style.

"Hybrid drivers enjoy trying to get the most fuel economy from their vehicles," said Dan Bonawitz, vice president of American Honda Motor Co., Inc. "The visual nature of Eco Assist is intended to help drivers improve their efficient driving skills by making the hybrid experience more fun and rewarding."

Honda developed the powertrain control, driver guidance and driver feedback functions of Eco Assist to help enhance real-world fuel economy. In particular, the scoring function provides cumulative, long-term feedback through graphic 'leaves,' which grow over time as drivers learn and implement driving practices that increase fuel economy.

Activated by a green "ECON" button on the instrument panel, ECON mode optimizes control of the transmission, engine and other powertrain elements to conserve fuel. ECON mode also adjusts air conditioner operation, increases the potential for engaging the idle stop feature sooner and increases battery charging during regenerative braking.

The guidance function uses the speedometer background's color-changing, three-dimensional appearance to indicate fuel efficiency in real time. Fuel-saving activities like smooth acceleration and braking make the meter glow green. Somewhat less efficient driving makes the meter glow blue-green. Aggressive starts and stops that consume extra fuel make the meter glow blue. By observing the speedometer background's response to driving practices and seeking to achieve a consistently green color, drivers can receive assistance in developing driving habits that typically enhance fuel economy.

The scoring function provides feedback about current driving practices, as well as cumulative, long-term feedback tracking progress. Located in the center of the instrument panel of the all-new Insight, the Multi-Information Display offers drivers a selection of informational displays, including the scoring function, in which the number of 'leaves' displayed indicates the level of environmentally responsible driving performance. When the ignition switch is on, the display scores driving practices in real time. When the ignition switch is turned off, the 'leaves' in the top line of the display score driving in the just completed cycle (startup to shutdown), while a horizontal bar in the lower part of the display scores cumulative lifetime performance.

The Multi-Information Display also allows drivers to view fuel economy figures for the past three trips, as well as instantaneous and average fuel economy statistics. The scoring function encourages drivers to take an interest in developing fuel-efficient driving habits over the long term.

Going on sale in North America next spring, the all-new, purpose-built Insight will come to market at a price significantly below that of hybrids available today. From this unique position in the marketplace, the Insight will advance the affordability and accessibility of hybrid technology to a new generation of buyers.

With its affordable price, the new hybrid vehicle will represent the best value in its segment. Along with the Civic Hybrid, the new vehicle will be produced at an expanded hybrid vehicle production line at the Suzuka factory in Japan.

The Insight is expected to have annual global sales of 200,000 units per year -- approximately 100,000 in North America. Following the launch of the new Insight, Honda also plans to introduce another unique sporty hybrid vehicle based on the CR-Z, a concept car first shown at the 2007 Tokyo Motor Show.

The original Honda Insight was introduced in December 1999 as North America's first gas-electric hybrid car. The original Insight was designed from the ground up to demonstrate the ultimate potential for fuel-economy in a two-seater subcompact automobile.

A leader in the development of cleaner, more fuel-efficient mobility products, Honda was the first to market low-emission gasoline vehicles, a gasoline-electric hybrid car in North America, and the world's first EPA-certified hydrogen fuel-cell vehicle, the FCX. In 2007, Honda was named "greenest automaker" by the Union of Concerned Scientists for the fourth straight time.

RTEV and Shuanghuan Automobile Announce Electric Car Partnership
ATLANTA and SHIJIAZHUANG CITY, China, RTEV (Ruff & Tuff Electric Vehicles) and Shuanghuan Automobile Company announced today that they have formed a partnership to produce and market affordable all-electric cars for sale around the world.

Toyota Displays Hybrid Synergy Drive Versatility With CNG-Powered Camry Hybrid Concept at 2008 Los Angeles Auto Show
LOS ANGELES, -- Toyota Motor Sales (TMS), U.S.A., Inc., today highlighted the versatility of its Hybrid Synergy Drive(R) system by showing a compressed natural gas (CNG) Camry Hybrid concept vehicle at the 2008 Los Angeles Auto Show.

"In the near future, growing demand for gasoline simply and effectively will exceed supply," said Chris Hostetter, group vice president, TMS Advanced Product Strategy. "Before that occurs, automakers must look to vehicles powered by alternative fuels. We believe CNG will be one of those alternatives."

The current CNG benefits are amplified by rapidly changing market conditions and an increase in consumer environmental awareness. As a transport fuel, natural gas is a clean and safe gasoline alternative. It can potentially reduce U.S. dependency on foreign oil and reduce vehicle operating costs. Currently more than 99 percent of natural gas used in the U.S. comes from domestic & other North American sources. Proven worldwide natural gas reserves are estimated to last until 2100 and have the potential to last until 2200 through improved advanced production methods.

Natural gas also produces lower particulate emissions, nitrous oxide (NOx), carbon monoxide (CO), carbon dioxide (CO2) and non-methane organic gases (NMOG), and less CO2 per unit of energy when compared with gasoline. In addition, it has a higher flash point (ignition temperature) than gasoline, can run at a higher compression ratio and is quickly dispersed into the atmosphere, should a leak occur.

The CNG Camry Hybrid concept was designed by the TMS Advanced Product Strategy group and built by Metal Crafters of Fountain Valley, Calif. To convert the stock Camry Hybrid to a CNG vehicle, the gasoline fuel system was replaced with a CNG system including two CNG tanks installed in the spare tire well area.

The exterior of the vehicle also received some sporty 'concept' touches. A sleek custom front fascia and front bumper cover eliminate the grill opening, while a custom rear bumper covers the tail pipe and visible exhaust system. The vehicle is fitted with 19 x 7.5 alloy wheels and Bridgestone Potenza 225/35ZR19 run-flat tires to accommodate the lack of a spare tire. The overall ride height is lowered while new side body skirts and "Compressed Natural Gas Hybrid" graphics complete the unique look.

In 1999, Toyota marketed a CNG-powered four-cylinder Camry to fleet customers in California. Due to relatively low gasoline costs at that time, customers were not attracted to a vehicle that required special refueling techniques and a limited refueling infrastructure. The program was discontinued a year later. Today there are less than 1,000 CNG refueling stations nationwide, with less than half open to the public.

"Toyota believes CNG has huge potential, both in the U.S. and globally," said Hostetter, "but CNG is just one of the many alternative fuels we're exploring in our ongoing advanced technology research and development."

Hyundai Blue Drive: A Strategy for Environmental Leadership
Hyundai's First U.S. Hybrid System Uses Breakthrough Lithium Polymer Batteries and Leapfrogs Existing Nickel-Metal Hydride and Lithium-Ion Technology

LOS ANGELES, PRNewswire/ -- Hyundai Motor America announced today the launch of Blue Drive, an environmental initiative which will bring to market a family of eco-friendly Blue Drive products and establish Hyundai as an environmental leader. With Blue Drive products and technologies, Hyundai will be able to achieve a fleet average of 35 miles per gallon by 2015, five years ahead of government requirements. During a news conference at the Los Angeles Auto Show, the company revealed plans for its first U.S.-market gas-electric full hybrid (to be offered in the next-generation Sonata), introduced a sleek crossover concept powered by a turbocharged gasoline direct injection (GDI) engine, and announced future high-mileage editions of the Accent and Elantra, underscoring its global commitment to sustainable transportation.

"Hyundai aims to be the most fuel-efficient automaker on the planet," said John Krafcik, vice president, Product Development and Strategic Planning, Hyundai Motor America. "We're aligning our global R&D resources in Michigan, California, Nam Yang, and Frankfurt to develop the Blue Drive technologies we need to achieve our goal - a 35 mpg U.S. fleet average by 2015."

Hyundai's Hybrid Blue Drive Architecture

An all-new, homegrown hybrid architecture is at the heart of the Hyundai Blue Drive strategy. Hyundai's proprietary parallel hybrid drive system mates the already fuel efficient 2.4-liter Theta II engine to a 6-speed automatic transmission and a 30kW (205 N-m) electric motor for maximum fuel economy. Hybrid Blue Drive has an all-electric mode and a parallel drive mode. This means the wheels are turned by power coming directly from the gasoline engine, or the electric motor, or both together, as conditions demand. This parallel hybrid drive architecture will serve as the foundation for future hybrid drive vehicles to be developed by Hyundai, starting with the next-generation Sonata in the United States.

Lithium Polymer Battery Technology

Hyundai's hybrid system stores its electrical charge in a 270V lithium polymer rechargeable battery (5.3Ah/270V) that surpasses existing nickel-metal hydride and pending lithium-ion applications. Lithium polymer batteries are more durable and space-efficient than other hybrid batteries.

Lithium Polymer Batteries vs. Nickel-Metal Hydride Batteries

Compared with nickel-metal hydride batteries, lithium polymer batteries deliver the same power with 30 percent less weight, 50 percent less volume and 10 percent greater efficiency over the nickel-metal hydride batteries found in all of today's hybrids. Lithium polymer batteries offer more than twice the energy density of nickel-metal hydride batteries, and 175 percent greater volumetric energy density, meaning Hyundai engineers can devote less space and weight to the battery pack. Lithium polymer batteries also hold their charge 20 times longer. Lithium polymer batteries also are more resistant to changes in temperature, which improves cycle life. And lithium polymer's self-discharge rate is less than a third of a nickel-metal hydride battery.

Lithium Polymer Batteries vs. Lithium-ion Batteries

Lithium polymer has significant advantages over lithium-ion batteries, including higher energy density and lower manufacturing costs. Lithium polymer is more resistant to physical damage and can handle more charge-discharge cycles before storage capacity begins to degrade. Lithium polymer technology also offers significant advantages in thermal robustness and safety compared with typical lithium-ion batteries.

A key difference between traditional lithium-ion batteries and Hyundai's lithium polymer battery solution is the overall packaging of the cell - the anode, the cathode, the electrolyte, and the encasement material. Traditional lithium-ion batteries, like those found in laptops, use what's known as the 18650 cell format. In this format each mass-produced cell is 18 mm. in diameter and 65 mm. tall, which is a bit larger than a AA battery. Each of these small metal cylinders is filled with a liquid electrolyte which facilitates the movement of lithium ions across anode and cathode, creating the battery current.

Traditional lithium-ion batteries are easy to handle, can withstand mild internal pressures, and have been around in various forms since 1991. That means a manufacturing infrastructure is in place, and scale economies are reasonably high. However, they do have several disadvantages. For example, their cylindrical shape reduces packaging efficiency and they are surprisingly complicated to manufacture since they have so many small parts. These small parts make them robust to thermal fluctuations and add significant cost and weight to the overall battery system. Cell-to-cell consistency also is extremely critical in a vehicle battery package, since the pack is only as robust as its weakest cell. Traditional lithium-ion batteries have considerable cell-to-cell variation, while Hyundai's lithium polymer batteries deliver outstanding cell-to-cell consistency.

Mine's better than yours
Anyone wishing to settle automotive rivalries should consider the 'Run What You Brung' (RWYB) programme at Santa Pod.

The internationally recognised drag-racing venue in Northamptonshire has just announced its 2009 schedule.

Mere mortals can turn up with their road car or bike, with a valid UK licence and enjoy a day's racing under full competition conditions for a mere £35 for the entire day. No competition licence is required.

RWYB offers a real chance to settle the age-old pub debate over whose machine is quickest, or who has the greatest reaction times - and all in the total safety of an FIA approved venue.

Compared to the average circuit track day at £150 - plus tyres, Santa Pod's RWYB sessions offer petrol-heads the chance to enjoy their vehicle at the limit of its performance, without spending a fortune.

Santa Pod General Manager, David Lloyd-Jones enthused, "For £35, you will get full computerised timing slips on each run, measuring your reactions, terminal speed and total quarter mile time.

"It's the equivalent of having unlimited use of Silverstone, under race conditions - with all of the timing gear at your disposal, for less than the cost of half a tank of fuel. Come and enjoy yourselves in a totally safe - and legal environment."

Toyota to cut N.America output, Nissan downbeat
TOKYO: Reeling from a relentless sales slide, Toyota Motor Corp said on Wednesday it would stop all of its North American factories for two days next month, while rival Nissan Motor Co renewed its pessimism over the industry's near-term prospects. Tight credit and worries over the spread of recession around the world have battered car sales in all major markets, forcing automakers to cut production to prevent inventories from ballooning further.

Toyota, the world's biggest automaker, had already cancelled all U.S. production of slow-selling light trucks for three months this summer. A spokeswoman said production would be reduced further in 2009 at three U.S. assembly plants. The worst economic crisis since the 1930s has hit healthy car makers hard and ailing rivals even harder, threatening the survival of Detroit's Big Three.

Chief executives of General Motors Corp, Ford Motor Co and Chrysler LLC warned Congress on Tuesday that their industry was teetering on the brink of disaster as they pleaded for a $25 bn aid package to ride out the storm. Carlos Ghosn, chief executive of Nissan and Renault SA, speaking separately in Washington, chimed in with his own bleak view of the sector's short-term prospects with a reminder that Nissan was expecting virtually no profit in the October-March second half.

"We have to recognise 2009 will be one of the most challenging years for our industry and the whole economy in the last 50 years," Ghosn told the Wall Street Journal in an interview. Ghosn told CNBC that U.S. industry-wide sales falling to 11-11.5 mn vehicles next year was a "realistic" assessment. Sales totalled 16.15 mn in 2007. His deputy, Chief Operating Officer Toshiyuki Shiga, told reporters in Tokyo on Wednesday the company was sticking to its annual operating profit target of 270 bn yen ($2.8 bn).

That would mean a second-half profit of just 78 bn yen -- less than a fifth of last year's 424 bn yen. Shiga added that if the U.S. and European governments offered financial assistance to their automakers to help them fund development of cleaner and more efficient technologies, Japan should follow suit to provide a level playing field.

"I would want the Japanese government to consider the same," he said at the unveiling of the third-generation Cube, remodelled for sale globally for the first time as smaller, fuel-sipping vehicles gain traction.

LONG CHRISTMAS In the latest sign that the demand slowdown has spread to previously healthy emerging markets, a Toyota official said the automaker was tracking towards Chinese sales of around 600,000 cars in 2008, instead of an official target of 700,000 units.

"We haven't given up on the target, but if the current pace continues, it looks like we'll end with 600,000," a spokesman said. Sales of 600,000 units would still represent a 20 percent increase from last year. In the more important U.S. market, Toyota's sales are down 12 percent in the year to date, prompting the roll-out of zero-percent financing and threatening to erase profits in the second half.

Toyota

did not say how many vehicles' worth of production would be lost as a result of the two-day stoppage on Dec. 22 and 23, on top of a scheduled break for Christmas and New Year. The automaker has the capacity to build about 2 mn vehicles a year in the United States and Canada. It produces cars, trucks, engines and other parts at 11 factories in the two countries, including at a joint venture plant with GM and a factory belonging to Fuji Heavy Industries Ltd, the maker of Subaru cars.

Toyota said it would also slow the pace of production at its Kentucky plant, which builds the gasoline and hybrid Camrys, among others, and halve its temporary workforce of 500 by March. Its Indiana factory and California joint venture plant will reduce production of the Sienna minivan and Tacoma pickup truck indefinitely from January. Earlier this month Toyota cut its production plans outside Japan by 7 per cent to 4.07 mn vehicles for the business year to March 2009.

The Renault-Nissan Alliance and the State of Oregon Form Zero-Emission Vehicle Partnership
LOS ANGELES, The Renault-Nissan Alliance today announced that Nissan and the state of Oregon are forming a partnership to advance zero-emission mobility by promoting the development of an electric vehicle (EV) charging network. Portland General Electric (PGE) also is a participant in the partnership and is working toward the development of an easily accessible and reliable network of charging stations.

The Alliance has committed to being a global leader in zero-emission vehicles (ZEV). Nissan will introduce ZEVs in the United States in 2010 and will mass market ZEVs globally two years later. Ghosn announced the Oregon agreement during an address at the Los Angeles Auto Show.

"This partnership represents a major step toward reliable zero-emission mobility in the state of Oregon," said Carlos Ghosn, President and CEO of Nissan Motor Co., Ltd., and Renault SA,. "Together, we are creating conditions that will encourage consumers to consider an electric vehicle as an attractive choice that is also good for the environment."

The partnership supports Oregon Gov. Theodore Kulongoski's commitment to sustainability, which includes the effort to lead the nation in establishing the infrastructure necessary for a greener transportation system.

"Today's announcement shows that a state can create economic opportunity from its commitment to a greener future and the fight against global warming," Gov. Kulongoski said. "Oregon welcomes Nissan and is pleased to help lead the way in the transition to new, greener vehicle technologies. By partnering with Nissan and Portland General Electric, we can work together to build a consistent and reliable refueling infrastructure so consumers can make the switch to electric vehicles."

As part of the agreement, Nissan has committed to make available a supply of ZEVs to the state of Oregon and work with the state to develop plans to promote the EV Charging Network. The state, in partnership with the Oregon Department of Transportation, has committed to promote the deployment, operation and maintenance of the EV Charging Network by developing specifications for charging stations and seeking agreements with suppliers that may be used by entities such as local governments and utility companies.

The state, under Gov. Kulongoski's leadership, and Nissan are working with PGE towards the creation of the EV charging network. PGE, as part of its plug- in vehicle initiative, is striving to find innovative solutions to Oregon's transportation and energy challenges through the development of a model charging station infrastructure, as well as identifying its infrastructure needs related to vehicle-to-grid technology. Over the past several months, PGE has installed six charging stations- with the capability to charge several dozen vehicles - across the Portland and Salem areas, with more on the way.

"PGE is committed to playing a leadership role to bring this zero-emission transportation option to Oregon residents and businesses," said Peggy Fowler, CEO and president, PGE. "We look forward to sharing technical and educational information in the coming months as we grow our network of stations across the region."

The Renault-Nissan Alliance has begun ZEV initiatives in Israel, Denmark, Portugal, Kanagawa Prefecture (Japan), and with French electric utility company EDF. In the United States, the Alliance also has agreed to a ZEV partnership with the state of Tennessee the Tennessee Valley Authority, and other partners, to explore ways to promote zero-emission mobility in Middle Tennessee.

2008 LA Auto Show - Nissan Introduces All-New 2009 cube and 370Z
LOS ANGELES, Carlos Ghosn, president and CEO, Nissan Motor Co., Ltd., today announced a new electric-vehicle partnership with the state of Oregon, in line with Nissan's commitment to begin offering pure electric cars in 2010 in the United States and Japan. The announcement came in a keynote address at the opening of the 2008 Los Angeles Auto Show.

"We see in Oregon the vision that is evident in all the places that are eager for sustainable mobility," said Mr. Ghosn. "Demonstrating their care for the environment, the state and its partners are creating the conditions that will promote zero-emission vehicles as an attractive choice for consumers."

Nissan will launch its first electric vehicle in Oregon in late 2010. Oregon Gov. Ted Kulongoski is proposing replacing the current $1,500 tax credit on hybrid vehicles with a $5,000 credit on all-electric cars.

Mr. Ghosn's presentation was followed by the North American debuts of two all-new 2009 Nissan vehicles - the Nissan 370Z sports car and the Nissan cube. The Los Angeles Auto Show is open to the public from Nov. 21-30 at the Los Angeles Convention Center.

The iconic 2009 Nissan 370Z, the first full redesign of the Nissan Z(R) since its reintroduction as a 2003 model, is scheduled to go on sale in North America in January 2009.

Nearly every piece and component of the current Nissan 350Z has been rethought or redesigned resulting in a more refined, more powerful, better handling 370Z - a shorter wheelbase, greater use of lightweight body materials, larger 332-horsepower 3.7-liter DOHC V6 engine with Variable Valve Event and Lift Control (VVEL), a new 7-speed automatic transmission, a world's first synchronized downshift rev matching system for the 6-speed manual transmission, a new high quality interior design and new available technology features.

The 2009 370Z has a starting Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price (MSRP)* of $29,990, providing passionate performance at an excellent value. At this price the new 370Z is about $280 less than a comparably priced 2008 350Z Enthusiast model - yet it offers more standard equipment, such as Nissan Intelligent Key(TM), side and curtain supplemental air bags and Vehicle Dynamic Control (VDC). The new Z(R) is available in two models: 370Z and 370Z Touring.

The boxy yet stylish Nissan cube, known in the Japanese market for its unique combination of fashion and functionality, will be available for the first time in the United States beginning in spring 2009.

The 2009 Nissan cube provides the utility and dependability consumers expect in a small car wrapped in a package that is anything but square. It's unique, non-traditional design features an asymmetrical body, a stout "bulldog-like" stance, wide doors, a large greenhouse with wraparound rear window, and a refrigerator-style rear door.

Inside, the new cube's interior is a roomy social space, designed to be a destination rather than a way to get to get one. Capable of seating up to five passengers, the new cube offers a plethora of innovative storage solutions ideal for storing cell phones, MP3 players and other personal items. To accommodate its occupants, the new cube provides comfortable front seating with a three-position sliding, reclining theater-style rear seat.

The front-wheel-drive cube is available with a standard 122-horsepower 1.8-liter DOHC 4-cylinder engine and a choice of Nissan's advanced, smooth- shifting Xtronic CVT(TM) (Continuously Variable Transmission) or 6-speed manual transmission. Fuel efficiency is expected to be over 30 mpg highway with the CVT transmission (actual EPA estimates not available at this time). Cube is offered in three well-equipped models: cube 1.8, cube 1.8 S and cube 1.8 SL. A long list of safety features are standard on the cube, including six air bags. Accessories will also be offered, allowing cube owners to personalize their vehicles to reflect their own tastes and needs.

In North America, Nissan's operations include automotive styling, engineering, consumer and corporate financing, sales and marketing, distribution and manufacturing.

Schwarzenegger Opens Climate Summit with Obama
BEVERLY HILLS, CA -: Liz Sidoti writing for the AP reported that Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger opened his international climate change summit on Tuesday by upstaging himself with an even bigger political star — President-elect Barack Obama.

Schwarzenegger, a Republican whose efforts to combat global warming in California have generated worldwide acclaim, wants to show that governments can balance environmental protection and economic growth. He hopes his summit will influence negotiations over a new climate treaty during a U.N. gathering in Poland next month.

In a taped message to attendees, Obama said his administration is committed to a cause that has all but languished at the federal level during the term of President George W. Bush.

"Once I take office, you can be sure that the United States will once again engage vigorously in these negotiations and help lead the world toward a new era of global cooperation on climate change," Obama said.

U.N. negotiators have a December 2009 deadline to complete the next global warming treaty, which would succeed the 1997 Kyoto Protocol. That treaty, which expires in 2012, does not include the U.S. or China — the world's largest emitters.

Negotiators want to cut in half the amount of carbon dioxide discharged into the atmosphere from transportation, industry and power generation by mid-century.

In his roughly four-minute address to Schwarzenegger's conference, Obama said the U.S. economy would continue to weaken if climate change and dependence on foreign oil are left unaddressed.

He reiterated his support for cutting greenhouse gas emissions using a cap-and-trade system, an approach also favored by Schwarzenegger. Obama said he would establish annual targets to reduce emissions to their 1990 levels by 2020 and reduce them another 80 percent by 2050.

Obama also promoted anew his proposal to invest $15 billion each year to support private-sector efforts toward clean energy. He said tackling climate change can create millions of new jobs as the U.S. invests in technologies to promote solar and wind power, biofuels and cleaner coal-fired plants.

"I promise you this: When
